Anybody who is smart knows that you must insist on high quality images or videos to promote your business or services. These high quality images can then be used in the promotional material, websites and platforms. What people forget to do is optimize these images and videos correctly for their online content.
Below, we’ve put together an easy step-by-step guide on how to best optimize your images.
1. Image Name
Save the image name to something that describes the image content. Example: Wechat_Wallet_Payment_-_Name_and_Number_Circled.jpg vs DSC_0004_57362.jpg
2. Title of Image
Write a title that tells people what the photo is about, and if applicable add a geographic location.
3. Alternative text
The alternative text is the most important part, this is what Google, Bing and Baidu reads. Also, visually impaired persons will get this text read out to them. Add a description of the photo in this part and throw in a few keys words as well. Example “teaching photography at HGR Technology”
This is the text that appears below your image on your webpage. I generally do not use this as it puts a frame around the photo. I only usually use this feature if I am giving credit for the image being used. This doesn’t help your search engine optimization.
Complete this only for your own organization and make sure the page content relates to the image. It won’t help your search engine optimization.
Mix up your image keywords – you don’t want to continuously use the same words. With search engines like Google, Bing and Baidu getting billions of searches each month, it is important to pull out all the stops to get ranked for your target keywords.
7. WordPress Plugins
WordPress always amazes me at how many plugins it has and how useful these plugins are. To better optimize your photos we advise you to download the plugin WordPress SEO. Click on Media in your wordpress dashboard, then click on any image and go to the bottom of the page where you will find the WordPress SEO by Yoast.
8. Focus Keyword
Simply, add a keyword or key phrase that you want to focus on which is described in the text, photo or video.
9. SEO Title
Usually, this will be the name of the image or video. Try and have the focal keyword within this title for better focus on the word you are aiming for.
10. Meta description
The meta description is often shown as black text under the title in a search result. For this to work it has to contain the keyword it was searched for.
