This is a step-by-step guide on how to get your company website ‘out there’ by adding company news, events, related topics, social media and marketing tools.

Setting Up

So you company website has been created in WordPress and you want to add company news, events and company related topics. I am going to show you exactly how to start, which can be used from any computer, tablet, or smartphone. WordPress is the most popular blog platform in the world, and with good reason. In this step-by-step guide I am going to show you EXACTLY how to create a blog so that you get the most out of it.

The Internet is exploding with growth right now. More people than ever are online. This explosion in growth means more potential readers for your blog/company news. In short, there is no better time than today to start your blog.

By using your blog and social media correctly this will create traffic to your company website and gain a lot of recognition in your respective field. Traffic to your website so more and more people know who you are, what you have to offer and how to contact you.

Step 1 – Logging In

To start with, you will need to login to your site.

To bring up the login screen (replace “yoursite.com” with your domain name).

This will bring you to the WordPress dashboard.

 Step 2 – Starting Your Post

Blogging is all about writing, so let’s learn how to write your first blog post. Go to the left menu and click on “Posts”. (Click the image below to see a larger version.) To begin writing a new post, click the “Add New” link (found in either the left menu or next to the word “Posts”)

Step 3 – Writing Your Content

You should now be on the post creator screen. You can enter the title of your post in the top box and then begin writing your post in the lower box. There are various styles, fonts, sizes, links and justifications you can edit here. I suggest doing the majority of your content writing in MS Word or something similar then copy and paste the text across.

Step 4 – Photos and Media

If you would like to add a picture to your post, click on the “Add Media” button and click “Select Files” to upload a picture from your computer. You can make adjustments to the picture size and alignment on the next screen. When you are all set click “Insert into post” to add the picture. At this point you can move around your picture, justify it to the left, centre or right, make it a thumbnail or a big picture.

Be aware that pictures may be subject copyright. Most search engines now have a ‘User Rights’ search tool, this means if you do a search for a photo you want check your ‘usage rights’.

There is the option of using one of the many ‘stock photo’ websites and for a small fee purchase the photo. Example ‘www.shutterstock.com’, but the best way by far is take your own photos, either using your own camera of getting a professional photographer like HGR Technology.

Step 5 – Featured Image

The featured image is the image that you see in your lists of blogs to make the content more appealing. Click ‘Set featured image’ in the bottom right menu. This will take you to the ‘image library’ again where you can either select an image or upload a new image. Try to rename all your image titles correctly as search engines read these titles and they help to get recognition for your blog.

Step 6 – Categories

Categories decide where your blog will live. If you have setup your website with an ‘Events Blog’ and a ‘News Blog’ if you click on both the blog will appear in both pages.

Step 7 – Tags, Tags, Tags

I can’t stress enough how important tags are. Tags or Keywords are the magical thing that tells the all and might search engine what is important in your content. Tags are helping you to rank higher in the search engines. Each of these Tags can also be a web link leading to an index page.

Step 8 – Publishing

Once you have finished your post just click the “Publish” button on the right side of the screen to publish it. If you’re not ready to ‘publish’ your blog but you want to save and do something else just click the edit and change to ‘draft’. Don’t worry you can ‘edit’ your post at anytime you want just click ‘edit post’ at the top of the post.

Step 9 – Social Media

We suggest adding a Social Media plugin to your blog; this makes sharing your content with the different social media simple. The whole idea of writing your blog is to get your content ‘out there’ which will intern generate more traffic to your site.
